Staff Attorney - Kids Team

General Summary:

The staff attorney for the Kids Team will represent clients in individual cases, in addition to participating in larger "systems change" litigation. Individual clients for this Team are young people (age birth to 21) who have serious mental illness and require a continuum of quality mental health services.

Job Duties:

  • Represents individual clients consistent with Disability Rights NC's priorities and selection criteria, including development of case strategies, drafting of pleadings and other documents, and appearing before administrative bodies and in judicial proceedings
  • Provides advice and assistance to Disability Rights NC's clients, including writing letters explaining legal rights and procedures
  • Evaluates potential cases for representation and other assistance
  • Participates in outreach activities to under-served areas and populations
  • Develops training programs in substantive issues for the education and training of Disability Rights NC staff, professionals and the public
  • Compiles information for program activity reports
  • Assists in the planning and development of Disability Rights NC's program priorities

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
  2. Ability to travel.
  3. Ability to occasionally work long hours and/or weekends.
  4. Ability to record data into the agency's database.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  6. Ability to conduct research and analyses of pertinent legal authority.

Requirements:

  • Admitted to practice law in North Carolina courts or eligible to sit for the next bar exam
  • Minimum of two years of legal experience; civil litigation experience desired
  • Demonstrated interest in disability law and a commitment to the civil rights of persons with disabilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Computer proficiency for word processing and data collection
  • Ability to travel
