Kids Team Advocate 
Date: February 2010Reports to: Team Leader FLSA: Exempt Location: Asheville, NC 
General Summary: The Kids Team Advocate is a non-attorney advocate who provides technical assistance, consultation, outreach and training to clients, their treatment teams and community members about the rights of children with mental illness under Medicaid, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the IDEA and the ADA. The Advocate provides, under attorney supervision, direct advocacy representation to clients in individual cases and monitors the compliance of mental health facilities for youth with respect to the rights and safety of the residents. 
Job Duties: Provides information and short-term assistance to DRNC clients which includes writing letters and memoranda Represents individual clients consistent with DRNC's priorities and selection criteria including the development and implementation of all phases of case strategies and activities including negotiation, mediation, and representation in administrative proceedings Monitors facilities that serve children with mental illness for compliance with respect to residents' rights and safety Prepares written materials and conducts activities for the purpose of educating and training youth with mental illness on their rights and the protection and advocacy services available to them Prepares reports, articles and special projects, draft legislation and regulations, and participates when assigned in legislative advocacy Participates in outreach activities to un-served/under-served populations Develops staff training programs in substantive issues including updating staff on developments within their specialty area as well as training staff on office practices and policies Collaborates with staff in the development of systemic activities as appropriate Assists in the planning and development of the agencies program priorities Compiles information and prepares activities reports 
Requirements: Bachelor's degree in one of the following areas: sociology, psychology, public policy, social work, special education or other related fields and a minimum of one to three years of experience working in a disability related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience Familiarity in using computers for work processing, data collection and communication Effective communication skills, including public speaking and written communication Direct experience with or general knowledge of services and issues affecting individuals with disabilities or direct experience in providing information and referral or advocacy services in the public interest Ability to organize and prioritize complex tasks Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to travel
