Disability Rights North Carolina

Introduction to the Board

A seventeen member Board of Directors guides Disability Rights North Carolina in developing and fulfilling its mission and vision. (Board Roster)

Disability Rights NC's Board strives to reflect the diverse constituency served by Disability Rights NC and the Board's own commitment to that diversity. At least a majority of the Board is comprised of people with disabilities and the Board makes every effort to ensure that Board appointments reflect the socioeconomic, ethnic, geographic, and disability diversity of North Carolina. Board members are appointed based on a demonstrated interest and experience in issues affecting North Carolinians with disabilities.

Disability Rights NC's Board meets four times per year in locations throughout the state. (Board Meeting Notices) (Approved Board Minutes). Reimbursements to Board members will be made for expenses incurred on behalf of Disability Rights NC, if properly documented. These expenses include such things as mileage, meals, lodging, miscellaneous travel expenses, etc. and other items consistent with the member support policy. Board members are not paid an honorarium.

All members of the Disability Rights NC Board of Directors and its PAIMI Advisory Council are entitled to adequate supports in order to be fully functioning members of the Disability Rights NC Board or the Advisory Council. To that end, Disability Rights NC will provide the support as a matter of course to any member who requests them.

Public Members on Board Committees

Disability Rights NC's Board believes that it is important to hear from and work with members of North Carolina's diverse disability community. To help ensure that these diverse communities can influence the Board's work, the Audit/Finance, Bylaws, Communication and Program Board committees include public members. Public members serve as full members of these committees. They receive all Committee materials and vote on matters that come before the Committee. Public members currently serve one year terms and are eligible for reappointment.

Disability Rights NC PAIMI Advisory Council Disability Rights NC has an Advisory Council which advises the Board on policies and priorities. The PAIMI (Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness Act) Advisory Council is required by federal law and provides advice regarding: services to persons with psychiatric disabilities; reviews PAIMI goals and priorities and assists in the annual PAIMI Program Performance Review process.
